How to Secure an iPad (9 Steps)

Tap 'Settings' on your home screen. You'll see a settings navigation pane on the left and a main pane on the right.
Tap 'General' on the left pane and then 'Passcode Lock' about midway down the right pane.
Tap 'Turn Passcode On' at the top of the screen. A 'Set Passcode' window will pop up.
Key in a four-digit passcode that you can remember easily. When prompted, re-enter your passcode to confirm it.
Tap 'Require Passcode' to choose the delay before a passcode is required. You'll see six options, from immediately to four hours. Bear in mind that if you choose one, five or 15 minutes, or one or four hours, someone using your iPad will have that much time to make calls, send emails, make online purchases and peer through your iPad data before keying in a passcode. The shorter your delay time, the more secure.
Tap the 'Simple Passcode' switch to toggle it 'Off' if you prefer to create a longer, more complex passcode using letters and numbers. Enter your old, four-digit passcode in the pop-up window. Next, enter your new passcode and then re-enter it when prompted.
Tap the 'Picture Frame' switch to toggle it 'Off'. Your iPad will deactivate the lock-screen slideshow of the photos in your albums or camera roll.
Tap the 'Erase Data' switch to toggle it 'On'. This instructs your iPad to self-erase after 10 failed passcode attempts. Failed passcode attempts suggest that someone with less than honorable intentions is trying to guess his way to unlocking your device, and this prevents him from succeeding.
Press the 'Sleep/Wake' button on the upper-right edge of your iPad to put it to sleep. Next, press the 'Sleep/Wake' button again or the 'Home' button to awaken your iPad and then drag the 'Slide to Unlock' slider to the right. Type your passcode in the 'Enter Passcode' window to confirm your new passcode settings.

How to Find a Stolen iPad

Retrace your steps. If your property has been broken into or you have been mugged, then clearly your iPad can be classified as stolen. However, if it goes missing under vague circumstances, first make sure that someone has indeed taken it. Go back to the place where you think it was stolen and look around. Someone might have found it and turned it in. Ask store cashiers and restaurant waiters if they have a lost and found storage area.
File reports. When you are certain it has been stolen, go into your local police precinct and file a report of theft. Because it is a non-emergency, the police will more than likely not come to the place where the iPad was stolen. Once you get a case number from the police, call your property or renters insurance company to see if they will cover the iPad. You can give them your case number as a reference.
Lock the device. Your iPad may contain contact information, credit card accounts and sensitive emails. With your MobileMe service through Apple, you can lock your phone so that the thief cannot access any of your information. You will have had to set up the device beforehand with the 'Find my iPad' feature. Go to the MobileMe website and sign in. Click on the device that you want to lock. The iPad's built-in GPS will show you the device's approximate location. If you have already set up a four-digit passcode, then type that code in. If not, you will be prompted to type in a four-digit code and password.
Go to the location on the GPS. After you lock your device, use the map as a guide to find where the iPad is. The GPS will only give you an approximate location. It might be in the same place where you think it was stolen. If you come in contact with the person who you believe stole your iPad, do not try to confront them on your own. Call local law enforcement for help.

How to Replace a Macbook Screen (6 Steps)

Drain the battery, turn off your MacBook and disconnect it from any and all external power sources.
Remove all screws from the outside of the computer with the Phillips head screwdriver. Lay them out in a pattern that will allow you to put each individual screw back into its original location.
Remove the keyboard assembly and internal hardware of the computer. The system board is located directly underneath the keyboard and must be separated first. After the system board is out, proceed with the keyboard. This requires more unscrewing and may involve the disconnection of one or two delicate cables. Remove the screws slowly with your phillips head screwdriver, and remove the cables softly with your fingers. The exact number of screws and cables will depend on your version and generation of MacBook.
Disconnect the display cables connecting the screen to the motherboard. Use your plastic putty knife to gently lift up the top casing holding the screen into place. Remove the screws around the screen, and disconnect the cables at the bottom of the screen from the plastic part of the MacBook that connects with the bottom half. Remove the screws on either side of the screen holding it to the brackets, there will be two or three on each side. Remove the sleep magnet on the left side of the screen. Remove the screws from the top, and carefully remove the tape from the back of the screen. Separate the miniature webcam and remove the old screen from the side brackets.
Install the new screen. You will go through the exact same process as before, but in reverse. Place the new screen in the same position as the old one, place the brackets around it, replace the webcam and tape down the wires. Replace the screws into the brackets and the sleep magnet on the left side. Secure the screen into the top casing and proceed with reassembly.
Reassemble your MacBook. Install all components exactly as they were.

Repair permissions to maintain your computer. You really only need to do this after you install any new software or before you clone your hard drive. The Mac was designed to be low maintenance.
Reinstall when necessary. If you are running OS X 10.2 or higher, use the feature called 'Archive and Install.' It will move your system files into a 'Previous System' folder and reinstall your OS. Do this only when you have tried other measures and only after you back up any files you want to keep.

How to Buy RAM for a MacBook

Assess the applications and programs that you are going to run and the amount of RAM required for it. Applications having graphics and multimedia require more RAM and, without it, can often reduce the speed of your machine.
Check the existing configuration of RAM on your MacBook. For this, go to the 'Apple' menu and select 'About This Mac' to get the memory report. Also refer to the pie chart that is provided. Remember, yellow and red indicate the need to increase the amount of RAM.
Discover the maximum RAM configuration that your MacBook can support. For example, a MacBook 1.83 GHz has a fixed memory of 512 MB size and can support up to 2 GB of RAM. Similarly, a MacBook of 2 GHz has a fixed memory of 1 GB size and can support RAM up to a maximum of 2 GB.
Log on to the Apple Web site and note the specifications of MacBook. Determine your exact RAM requirement. Find out about the need to buy RAM through the OS X's Activity Monitor.
Contact Apple or other dealers that sell RAM for MacBook. It is always recommended to buy RAM from the manufacturer of MacBook so it won't cause kernel problems.

How to Troubleshoot a SuperDrive Optical Drive

Insert the disc nearly all the way into the SuperDrive slot to see if the mechanism that pulls the disc engages. The disc has to be at least 3/4 of the way into the drive before the drive pulls it in, and if it isn’t far enough into the drive, the mechanism doesn’t recognize it.
Try the disc several times in a row if the drive ejects the disc after a couple of seconds. Especially when a SuperDrive is new, it can be stiff and have difficulty in pulling in discs. Re-inserting the disc helps loosen the drive and engage the mechanism that pulls the discs in.
Make sure the disc doesn’t have any dirt or major scratching on the surface if the drive accepts the disc initially, but then ejects without initializing it for the system. If the disc doesn’t appear to be dirty or scratched, try a different disc in the SuperDrive, just to be sure that the disc isn’t the issue.
Place a disc in the drive and eject it multiple times in a row if the drive is having ejection issues. A new, stiff drive can experience issues with sluggish ejection. Inserting and ejecting a disc into the drive multiple times in a row should loosen the slot.
Drag the disc icon on the desktop to the trash if pressing the eject button or the “F12” key on the keyboard does not eject the disc. If the disc still does not eject, restart the computer and hold down trackpad or the mouse button while the computer is loading. The disc should eject.
Update the firmware for your MacBook Pro if the SuperDrive makes a lot of noise upon system startup and when waking from sleep mode. MacBook Pro’s EFI 1.8 and SuperDrive Firmware 3.0 updates were designed to this noise. Both can be downloaded free at the Apple website (See Resources).

How to Upgrade the Memory in a MacBook Pro

Use your MacBook Pro User Guide to determine the type of memory module you need and the amount of memory your system can handle. If you don't have a hard copy of your User Guide, you can download one from the Apple website (the link is available in the resources section).
Power down the MacBook Pro to a point where the computer is completely off.
Turn the computer over so that the bottom is facing upward.
Touch a non-painted metal object to remove the static off your body. Working on a computer's internal components with static on your body could damage the hardware. Also, refrain from walking around until you have finished upgrading the memory because moving around can generate more static.
Remove the battery from the MacBook Pro.
Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the three screws from the memory module cover. Put the screws in a place where they won't be lost.
Slide off the memory module cover and put it where you put the screws. Now you should be able to see the memory module(s).
Push out the tabs on the empty memory module port to prepare for inserting the new memory module.
Hold the memory module by the edge of the part (so you don't damage the module) and insert the memory module into the empty port. Fold the part down into the memory module compartment.
Replace the memory module cover and the battery and start up your MacBook Pro. The memory will automatically be discovered by the system once you've started up your system.

How to Fix a Laptop That Makes a Clicking Noise

Insert a CD or DVD into the optical disk drive to determine if the drive is making the clicking noise. Power the computer off and on to determine if the noise persists while the computer is turned off, or if the noise only occurs while the computer powers up or runs.
Remove any CD or DVD from the disk drive. If the computer makes a clicking sound only when reading from the disk drive, the disk itself may be the problem or the drive may be bad. Insert a different DVD or CD in the drive. If the noise continues, replace the drive or take the computer to a repair shop.
Remove the laptop from any uneven surface. If the surface is not level, the hard drive may not function properly and produce a clicking noise. Place the computer on a level surface and restart it to check that the clicking noise is gone.
Back up any important information from your hard drive onto a CD or external hard drive. If the clicking sound is coming from your hard drive, the drive may be going bad. Back up your important information while the drive is still working. Take the computer to a professional computer repair store to determine if you need to replace your hard drive.
Replace the hard drive if the drive makes a clicking sound because it no longer functions properly. Take the computer to a repair shop or send it to the manufacturer to replace the hard drive. If you have the expertise, you can purchase a new hard drive and replace it yourself. Consult your laptop owner's manual before attempting any repairs.

How to Defrag a Mac Hard Drive

Open the Disc Utility program, which is located in the 'Utilities' folder of your 'Applications' directory. Highlight your hard drive from the list and have the program repair the permissions. This is an easy way to correct some common computer errors which could be slowing your hard drive down.
Look for a program to defrag your computer. There are some free utilities that can work on your Mac hard drive, but you should seriously consider purchasing a program because of the stability and support that comes with a purchased product. Defragging programs include Disc Warrior and iDefrag (see Resources below).
Take steps to back up your data before you defrag a Mac hard drive. Data loss is unlikely with well-respected programs, but defragging is a long and extensive process, and you can never be too safe.
Plan to run your defragging program during a time when you won't need to use your computer. No matter which program you decide on, it can take up to several hours to defrag a Mac hard drive. Some companies even suggest running the program overnight.
Notice whether defragging your Mac hard drive improved your computer's performance. Opening applications and large files should be faster if only by a few seconds. If your hard drive is more than 75 percent full, the performance increase may be more noticeable.

How to Use a Handheld GPS With Your Tablet (4 Steps)

Use the dedicated handheld GPS unit solely to compute precise coordinates, then plug them into the tablet's mapping software. This is ideal for the many inexpensive tablets that ship without a dedicated GPS radio, but even if your tablet has one, GPS devices often obtain more precise location fixes or latch onto weaker signals than the GPS radios included in many smartphones and tablets. Because the GPS only works for navigation, while phones and tablets balance power consumption against many different features, a handheld GPS usually holds and tracks satellite signals more strongly than non-dedicated devices.
Use the GPS unit to track several waypoints, which you can reconstruct on a map with your tablet to recreate routes or geotag photos. Although GPS-ready tablet mapping applications streamline point-to-point navigation, they aren't optimized for complex routing. If you need to either plot a complicated route or recreate a route you've already traveled -- for example, on a hiking trip -- let the waypoint feature on the handheld GPS unit record several positions, then transcribe them into your map software to present rich and accurate itineraries for your travels. In addition, photo applications increasingly recognize geotagging -- so if you snapped some beautiful photos in a remote wilderness or on a boating trip, record the spot with the GPS and add the coordinates to your photos later using the tablet-based photo editor of your choosing.
Augment your GPS device's limited display with richer maps while on the road. Although portable GPS units only need power and a view of the satellite constellation, all but the most expensive devices usually only plot very simple, low-resolution maps. If you need more context -- including real-time traffic monitoring or data about local destinations of interest like restaurants and gas stations -- your tablet can supply the missing information while rendering easier-to-read, larger visual presentations of several different data layers.
Use your GPS to fix locations where the GPS unit itself lacks solid mapping capability. In a marine setting, for example, a handheld GPS might provide a fix over the water, but the device's maps won't tell you when you're about to run your boat aground. Instead, install chart-plotting software on your tablet that's compatible with National Marine Electronics Association standards, and let your handheld compute your location while your tablet serves up current marine charts. For example, iNavX for iPad and iPhone supports offline maps, and syncs with any GPS unit that can connect using NMEA protocols.

How to Bypass MacBook Passwords

Determine how many administrator and user accounts are on the MacBook. If the computer is booted up, select 'System Preferences' from under the apple in the upper left corner of the screen and click on 'Accounts.' Note that you really only need to bypass the administrator password, as standard user accounts are all controlled by the administrator. If you are unable to boot the computer due to a password, proceed to Step 2.
Insert a Mac OS X installation disc into your MacBook's drive. Select 'Restart' from under the apple in the upper left corner of the screen. When the computer begins the boot process (as soon as the screen becomes active), hold down the 'C' key until you see the spinning wheel on the screen.

Click on the arrow in the lower right corner of the window to proceed. (Note that the startup process takes longer when you're booting off an installation disc.) When the menus appear at the top of the screen, select 'Reset Password' from under the 'Utilities' menu.
Select the account whose passwords you want to bypass. If there are multiple user accounts, you will have to change them one by one and repeat the process for each account. Write down the passwords and remember that they're case sensitive, so check your Caps Lock key. You can also opt to leave the password field blank, meaning you don't enter anything in the field when it appears.

Quit the Password Utility and then quit the installer. You will be prompted to make one of three choices here, so select 'Restart' at this point. As soon as the MacBook reboots, hold down the track-pad button (or mouse button) to force the computer to eject the disc upon startup.

How to Fix MacBook Water Damage

Power off your MacBook as soon as it gets wet. If your MacBook was off when it got wet, do not power it back on. Powering the computer on can cause the water to short out some electrical components, and can cause permanent damage to the computer.
Remove the battery, and use a towel or other dry cloth to wipe off any water on the outside of your MacBook.
Fill an airtight container large enough to fit your laptop with dry, uncooked rice, then place your laptop in the container and seal it.
Leave your MacBook in the airtight container with rice for 24 hours. After 24 hours, if the computer still appears to have water in it, return the MacBook to the rice container for an additional 24 hours. If the computer appears to be dry, attempt to power it on.

How to Tell If Your Laptop Is Registered (4 Steps)

Locate your laptop's serial number. Most laptops have a serial number on the underside of the machine. A Dell laptop also has a 'service tag', which is useful in looking up purchase and warranty information.
Check the registration of your laptop at the manufacturer's website. This can often be done by entering the laptop serial number or service tag into an online form. Alternatively, you can call the laptop company, and check the registration of that particular machine.
Check the registration of the laptop's operating system. In Windows, this can be done by right-clicking on 'My Computer.' In Mac OS X, this can be done through the Apple menu (you can access the serial number in this way, as well). Often, this will not give you the exact identity of the owner or previous owners, but might give you some relevant information, such as a pseudonym.
Contact any institution under which the laptop may have been registered. For example, many universities and various governmental bodies require laptop registration. If your laptop appears to have been the property of such an institution, contact the relevant tech support staff to determine its registration information.

How to Design an iPhone Game (7 Steps)

Go to the Apple Developers website to confirm your computer and operating system are compatible with the development software. Read through the site to familiarize yourself with the Apple Developer Program. While the tools can be downloaded for free, you have to enroll in either the Standard Program or Enterprise Program to distribute your games through Apple's App Store. Both programs require a fee to join, but they provide the necessary development resources for testing and distribution.
Sign up to become a registered iPhone developer to proceed to download the tools.
Download the iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit) with Xcode IDE. The Apple site also has downloads available for the interface builder, compilers and shark analysis, as well as frameworks and samples.
Download the iPhone simulator. Use the iPhone simulator to test the program you are building on a virtual iPhone interface on your computer.
Familiarize yourself with Objective-C programming language. Prepare to do a lot of reading. While doing so, experiment with your development tools to understand the way things work.
Take extra care in debugging and error-proofing your software. Try to break your programs when you test them. Perform unusual game play. Touch screen game play, while principally similar to standard mouse game play, opens up possibilities for innovation as well as for critical errors. Not only is careful programming necessary, but seeking problems and conflicts trains you to think ahead and become a more efficient programmer.
Join forums and learn from your fellow developers. If you are stuck on a problem, seek the help of the iPhone programming community. Stay active in the forums to open possibilities that you have not previously considered. Keep at it and don't give up.

How to Determine If You Need More RAM in Your Computer

Eliminate any problems that could be causing effects that you may mistakenly blame on a lack of RAM. Use measures such as scanning your computer for viruses, defragmenting your hard drive and making sure at least 10 percent of the capacity on your hard drive is unused.
Look out for specific problems that may result from not having enough RAM. The main one is applications running slowly and being unresponsive. Less common ones include parts of the display on your screen appearing to be missing, or on-screen messages explicitly referring to a lack of memory.
Keep track of the problems you experience over the course of several days, noting which applications you are running. If the issue is related to a lack of RAM, the problems should happen regularly and not necessarily be affected by the particular application you are running.
Check how much RAM your computer uses. Open and run a typical combination of applications that you would normally be running at the same time. Then open Windows Task Manager by clicking the Start button (the Windows logo at the bottom left of the screen), typing 'task manager' and pressing the Enter key. In Task Manager, keep an eye on the figure next to 'Physical Memory' while carrying out a range of typical tasks in the applications you have open. If the listed figure is consistently at or close to 100 percent of memory, you may benefit from added RAM.
Check whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit by clicking the Start button, then clicking 'System and Security' then 'System.' Look for the details next to 'System type.' If you have a 32-bit system, you will not get any benefit from having more than 4 GB of RAM.

How to Speed Up Download Speeds on Mac (4 Steps)

Change your Internet connection. This is one of the only sure ways to speed up your downloads on a Mac. If you have a cable connection, consider switching to DSL. Even though cable can be faster, the more people connected in a given area, the more bandwidth is used and the slower the download speeds are for you. While DSL is constant, since you are not sharing your connection with anyone else, if you have DSL, consider upgrading the number of Mbps you can download. If you go from 1.5 to 3 or 5, you will notice a difference.
Open ports on your computer. This will allow the ports that you are downloading on to have more access to your computer and therefore download more quickly. Open “System Preferences” in the Apple menu.
Click on “Sharing” and select “Firewall.”
Click “New” and select “Other” from the drop-down menu. Input “6881-6889” in the “TCP Port Numbers” and “UDP Port Numbers” boxes and add a description. Press “OK” and check the new port to open it.
