How to Connect a Laptop to 3G (5 Steps)

Insert the SIM card into the USB modem, if your carrier requires it. Carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile use SIM cards—a small, fingernail-sized card that contains your personal cellular information. Remove the plastic cap from the modem and insert the SIM card into the slot until it clicks into place. Replace the cap.
Turn on the laptop. Insert the USB modem into an open USB port on the laptop.
Install the software by using the automatic installation wizard. The wizard should start once the laptop recognizes the presence of the new modem. Follow the prompts, accept the license agreement and click 'Install' until a window tells you that the installation is completed. Restart the laptop if prompted.
Connect to 3G with the USB modem by opening the software program that it installed. This can usually be found as a shortcut on the desktop or by opening the Start menu, clicking on 'All Programs' and looking for an application that has the name of your wireless carrier in it. Look for an option to 'Connect.' Choose this to activate the connection.
Open a web browser to test the modem.

How to Privately Track Your Missing Laptop Computer

Register your laptop computer with the manufacturer. This allows you to have the serial number recorded in their database. Law enforcement officials can easily identify your laptop later.
Apply a security sticker to your laptop. Security stickers come with strong adhesive that is extremely difficult to remove. Security Tracking of Office Property (STOP) stickers even chemically apply 'Stolen Property' tags beneath the sticker on the laptop that make your laptop identifiable as a stolen property; if the thief is able to remove the sticker, the 'Stolen Property' imprint is left showing. These security stickers also include your name, address and telephone number, and request the return of your laptop computer. Stuffbak, StopTheft and TrackItBack make popular security stickers (see Resources below).
Tell your Laptop computer to contact you when it is stolen or missing. Download and install the free laptop tracking software Adeona, and your laptop computer will contact you discreetly when it is missing. Adeona, from University of Washington programmers, is a small program that sends location information at regular intervals to a designated email address. This allows you to locate your missing laptop computer (see Resources below).
Subscribe to laptop computer tracking services. Lojack for Laptop and TrackItBack are popular laptop tracking service providers (see Resources below). For a fee, they will monitor the movement of your computer. They will also notify and work closely with law enforcement officials to recover your missing laptop.

How to Fix a Laptop That Makes a Clicking Noise

Insert a CD or DVD into the optical disk drive to determine if the drive is making the clicking noise. Power the computer off and on to determine if the noise persists while the computer is turned off, or if the noise only occurs while the computer powers up or runs.
Remove any CD or DVD from the disk drive. If the computer makes a clicking sound only when reading from the disk drive, the disk itself may be the problem or the drive may be bad. Insert a different DVD or CD in the drive. If the noise continues, replace the drive or take the computer to a repair shop.
Remove the laptop from any uneven surface. If the surface is not level, the hard drive may not function properly and produce a clicking noise. Place the computer on a level surface and restart it to check that the clicking noise is gone.
Back up any important information from your hard drive onto a CD or external hard drive. If the clicking sound is coming from your hard drive, the drive may be going bad. Back up your important information while the drive is still working. Take the computer to a professional computer repair store to determine if you need to replace your hard drive.
Replace the hard drive if the drive makes a clicking sound because it no longer functions properly. Take the computer to a repair shop or send it to the manufacturer to replace the hard drive. If you have the expertise, you can purchase a new hard drive and replace it yourself. Consult your laptop owner's manual before attempting any repairs.

How to Fix MacBook Water Damage

Power off your MacBook as soon as it gets wet. If your MacBook was off when it got wet, do not power it back on. Powering the computer on can cause the water to short out some electrical components, and can cause permanent damage to the computer.
Remove the battery, and use a towel or other dry cloth to wipe off any water on the outside of your MacBook.
Fill an airtight container large enough to fit your laptop with dry, uncooked rice, then place your laptop in the container and seal it.
Leave your MacBook in the airtight container with rice for 24 hours. After 24 hours, if the computer still appears to have water in it, return the MacBook to the rice container for an additional 24 hours. If the computer appears to be dry, attempt to power it on.

How to Repair a Dead Laptop Battery

Shut down the power on your laptop and close the screen.
Locate the battery case on the underside of your laptop. The case will be a narrow rectangle shape, and be about as long as the width of the laptop.
Notice a lock/unlock sliding switch underneath your laptop. Usually there are two of these switches, each with a battery symbol, near each end of the battery case.
Grasp the laptop battery with your fingertips as you slide one of the switches to the unlock position. Now unlock the second sliding switch. The battery case should now come loose, which will allow you to remove it from the laptop.
Put the battery case in a large freezer bag. Make sure the bag is sealed completely and place it in your freezer for 12 hours.
Remove the bag from the freezer after 12 hours have passed. Take your laptop battery out of the freezer bag and allow it to completely return to room temperature. If condensation appears on the battery case, wipe it away with a small towel.
Slide the battery case back into the empty compartment on the bottom of your laptop. Make sure to lock the battery in place by moving both lock/unlock switches to the locked position.
Plug your laptop into a wall outlet, but do not turn it on. Allow the battery to charge for several hours.
Turn your laptop on and check the battery monitoring icon to see if the unit is fully charged. Usually the icon is on the bottom right side of the computer screen. Wait until the icon shows a full charge before proceeding.
Remove the wall outlet power and continue using your laptop, or let it sit with the power on, until the battery runs completely down. Now plug power back into the laptop and fully recharge your battery. Repeat this cycle of charging and discharging four times. After the fourth cycle you should notice your battery holding a charge for a much longer time than before.
