Highlight 'Applications' from the 'Places' list on the left side of the 'Finder' window.

How to Troubleshoot Apple Laptops

Press the button on the MacBook battery, or on the side of the computer (for models with an integrated battery), to see if the battery is charged. Several LED lights indicate a charged battery; a single blinking light means the battery is empty.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the MacBook and the wall socket for one minute. Reconnect it first to the wall, then to the MacBook. If the LED on the MagSafe cable turns on, the laptop is now charging. Press the power button to see if the MacBook starts up.
Hold down the control, command, and power buttons for three seconds to attempt to restart your MacBook. You will hear a startup chime if this is successful.
Hold down command, option, and the 'P' and 'R' keys until you hear a startup chime. This resets the 'parameter RAM' or 'PRAM,' which may prevent your computer from starting up.
Reset the system management controller. There are two methods of doing this, depending on your MacBook. Reset MacBooks with a removable battery by disconnecting the power cord and removing the battery, then holding the power button for five seconds. In newer MacBooks with an integrated battery, hold the left-side shift, control, and option keys while pressing the power button. Reconnect the power cable and press the power button to start the MacBook.
Remove any additional RAM you may have installed and determine whether you can start up your MacBook without it. The method of removing RAM varies by MacBook; consult your MacBook's manual for instructions. If you are uncomfortable removing the RAM from your MacBook, skip to the next step.
Schedule a service appointment at an Apple Store or authorized reseller if these steps do not restore your MacBook. They will work through these steps as well, and set up a repair for your MacBook if it needs servicing.

How to Boot a Mac With an External Hard Drive

Connect the external drive to the computer you wish to boot. If the drive requires an external power source, make sure the power is connected and that the drive turned on. It is best to attach a USB drive directly to the computer, not through a USB hub.
Eject any CD or DVD that may be in either drive. The key combination you will use later is also applicable for booting from a CD or DVD.
Turn on or restart your computer. To restart a computer that is already on, press the power button once to enter the shut down-sleep-restart menu. You can also press 'Control + Command + Power' to restart unconditionally. The 'Command' key may be marked with a four-tipped curlicue figure, an apple or both. The 'Control' key may be marked with an upward pointing caret.
Press the key combination 'Control + Shift + Option + Delete' and hold it down while the computer starts up. The 'Option' key is usually marked with a diacritic that contains a diagonal line with a dash above it. The key might also be labeled 'Alt.' This key combination will force the computer to ignore the normal startup disk, which is usually an internal hard drive. The computer will instead boot from any attached bootable devices, such as an external drive or CD.

How to Increase Your Mac's Hard Drive Space

Copy important documents to an external drive or other backup source before deleting anything. This will ensure you can always restore deleted files if necessary.
Run a search for files larger than 100 MB (megabytes) in Finder by pressing Command-F and setting your parameters to match the image below. It's safe to delete large media files, but don't delete anything you're not sure about, especially files in the Library.
Open the Printers folder in the Library (Hard Drive>Library>Printers) and delete the folders for printers you don't use. These files can total around 4 gigabytes of wasted space. As before, only delete what you're sure you won't use.
Consolidate media libraries (photos, music, videos) onto an external drive to save even more space.
Manage duplicate songs in iTunes by selecting 'Show Duplicates' from the File menu. Erase duplicate files.
Ensure your Trash is empty. Open the Trash icon in the Dock, then press 'Empty' to fully delete files and save space.
