How to Stop Computers From Sharing My Mac Folders

Click the 'Finder' icon located on your dock or click the 'Apple' icon at the top of your screen, followed by selecting 'System Preferences' from the drop-down menu. Click the 'Sharing' icon located under the 'Internet & Network' section. You can also access System Preferences by holding down 'Fn' and 'Control,' followed by tapping the 'F2' key once. Press the down arrow until you highlight System Preferences, and tap the 'Return' key once.
Uncheck the box next to File Sharing, located on the left side of the dialog box. You can also remove the shared folders by clicking the 'Subtract' button under the 'Shared Folders' section. When finished, click the left arrow in the upper left hand corner of the dialog box or click the red button.
Install and turn on your firewall application to prevent other users from attempting to access your computer. Firewall protection is available online as trial software or you can purchase it at computer retail stores. Most downloadable firewall protection is shareware, which means you'll need to purchase the program in order to access all of its features and continue using it without disruption. Leave your firewall on when using the Internet, as being on a wireless network with other users can leave your computer vulnerable to hackers.
Click the 'Finder' icon on your dock, followed by highlighting the folder you currently share by clicking the folder once. Hold and release the 'Command' and 'i' keys to access the 'Get Info' section. Uncheck the box next to 'Share Folder' and click the red button in the upper left hand corner of the dialog box.

How to Boot a Mac With an External Hard Drive

Connect the external drive to the computer you wish to boot. If the drive requires an external power source, make sure the power is connected and that the drive turned on. It is best to attach a USB drive directly to the computer, not through a USB hub.

Turn on or restart your computer. To restart a computer that is already on, press the power button once to enter the shut down-sleep-restart menu. You can also press 'Control + Command + Power' to restart unconditionally. The 'Command' key may be marked with a four-tipped curlicue figure, an apple or both. The 'Control' key may be marked with an upward pointing caret.
Press the key combination 'Control + Shift + Option + Delete' and hold it down while the computer starts up. The 'Option' key is usually marked with a diacritic that contains a diagonal line with a dash above it. The key might also be labeled 'Alt.' This key combination will force the computer to ignore the normal startup disk, which is usually an internal hard drive.
