Data Recovery From a Dead Mac Hard Drive (7 Steps)

Remove all cables from the Mac that has the dead hard drive. Place the Mac next to a second Mac. Reattach the power cable and the keyboard to the Mac that has the dead hard drive. Plug the power cable into an wall socket.
Turn on the second Mac. Wait for the desktop to appear on the screen. Connect an end of the Firewire cable to the Firewire input on the back of each Mac.
Press and hold down the 'T' key on the keyboard of the Mac that has the dead hard drive. Press the power button momentarily to turn the Mac on while still holding down the 'T' key.
Release the 'T' key when an icon of the dead hard drive appears on the desktop of the second Mac.
Double-click the icon of the dead hard drive to open its window. Drag any or all of the data out of the window onto the desktop. Wait as a copy progress bar appears, fills in from left to right and then disappears---this could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending upon the amount of data that is being taken off the dead hard drive.
Drag the icon of the dead hard drive to the trash once the copy progress bar has disappeared. Press and hold down the power button on the Mac that has the dead hard drive until you hear it shut itself off---this will only take a few seconds.
Disconnect the Firewire cables from both Macs. Remove the keyboard and power cables from the Mac that has the dead hard drive. Place the Mac back in its original position and reattach the cables.

How to Connect a Macbook Pro to a MIDI Controller Keyboard Play Through an Amp

Plug one end of the MIDI cable into the 'MIDI Out' port on the MIDI controller keyboard. Plug the other end of the MIDI cable into the 'MIDI In' port on the audio interface.
Plug one end of the TRS cable into one of the 'Left Output' TRS jack on the audio interface, and plug the other end of the TRS cable into the 'Left Input' on the keyboard amp. Use the other TRS cable to connect the 'Right Output' on the audio interface to the 'Right Input' jack on the keyboard amp.
Turn on the Macbook Pro and click the Apple menu, then 'Preferences,' then 'Sound.' Click the 'Input' tab and select your USB or Firewire audio interface from the drop-down menu.
Click the software synthesizer's desktop icon to launch it. Alternatively, click 'Go,' then 'Applications,' and select your software synthesizer from the applications list.
Click 'MIDI Channel' in the software synthesizer and set it to '1.' Some applications allow you to open multiple software synthesizer tracks, in which case you should assign the MIDI channel on the 2nd track to '2,' and assign the MIDI channel on the 3rd track to '3.' MIDI allows up to 16 assigned channels at once.
Press 'MIDI Channel' on your keyboard and set it to '1.' If you have assigned multiple MIDI tracks to different channels, then the keyboard can switch between MIDI tracks by switching channels. This means you don't have to interrupt a performance to change MIDI tracks.
Click 'Options' or 'Preferences,' then 'Output' in the software synthesizer, and select your USB or Firewire audio interface as the output device if it is not already selected.
Turn the volume all the way down on the keyboard amp, then turn the keyboard amp on. Press a key on the keyboard, turn the volume up gradually, and listen for a sound.

How to Set Up the Internet for the PowerBook G4

Determine what kind of connection you will use to connect to the Internet. You must already have an account set up with an Internet provider. If you plan to use a wireless connection, rather than an Ethernet connection, make sure that your computer has an AirPort Card in it first. Without an AirPort Card inside it, you must use an Ethernet connection. (To determine if you have an AirPort Card, go to 'About This Mac' underneath the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and click 'More Info.' If you see 'AirPort' listed underneath 'Network,' then your computer has an AirPort Card installed.) If you're using an Ethernet cable, insert it into the PowerBook's Ethernet port, located on the left side.
Open 'System Preferences,' which is by default located on the Dock. It is also located in the Applications folder on the hard drive (which is titled 'Macintosh HD').
Click on 'Network.'
Click 'Assist me...' then 'Assistant.'
Give your connection a name, or just use the default name provided, and click 'Continue.'
Select the type of Internet connection you have (wireless, DSL or cable--it's DSL if your modem is connected to a telephone wire; it's cable if the modem is connected to a cable wire). Click 'Continue.'
Select the wireless connection that you want to connect to from the list, if you're connecting wirelessly, and enter your password, if required, then click 'Continue'; your computer will automatically connect to the wireless account, and you're done. If you are using an Ethernet cable to connect, click 'Continue' on the next page. Once you're back on the network page, select the network location you just created in the 'Location' tab, and click 'Apply.' If needed, a pop-up will ask for your username and password, and will finish the connection.

How to Boot a Mac With an External Hard Drive

Connect the external drive to the computer you wish to boot. If the drive requires an external power source, make sure the power is connected and that the drive turned on. It is best to attach a USB drive directly to the computer, not through a USB hub.
Eject any CD or DVD that may be in either drive. The key combination you will use later is also applicable for booting from a CD or DVD.
Turn on or restart your computer. To restart a computer that is already on, press the power button once to enter the shut down-sleep-restart menu. You can also press 'Control + Command + Power' to restart unconditionally. The 'Command' key may be marked with a four-tipped curlicue figure, an apple or both. The 'Control' key may be marked with an upward pointing caret.
Press the key combination 'Control + Shift + Option + Delete' and hold it down while the computer starts up. The 'Option' key is usually marked with a diacritic that contains a diagonal line with a dash above it. The key might also be labeled 'Alt.' This key combination will force the computer to ignore the normal startup disk, which is usually an internal hard drive. The computer will instead boot from any attached bootable devices, such as an external drive or CD.
