How to Change the Mac Startup Disk From the Command Line

Click the magnifying glass icon at the top of the Mac screen to display the Spotlight dialog box, type 'Terminal' and then click 'Terminal' in the list of results to launch the Terminal utility.
Type 'sudo bless -mount /Volumes/Startup_Disk_Name -setBoot' without the quotation marks into the Terminal window. The Bless command changes the startup disk. Replace 'Startup_Disk_Name' with the correct name of the disk you want to boot from. If the name contains spaces, enclose the entire path in quotation marks. For example, if your startup disk is labeled 'My Mac,' type the following command: sudo bless -mount '/Volumes/My Mac' -setBoot.
Press 'Enter' to run the command and change the startup disk. Note that your Mac boots from the new disk after you restart it. To restart the Mac from the command line immediately, run the following command: sudo shutdown -r now. Don't forget to save your work before you issue the command.

How to Use an iPad in ESL

Use the iPad to facilitate a vocabulary race. Divide your students into teams and give each team an iPad. Instruct team captains to open the 'Notes' application and list, alongside their teams, all the adjectives, verbs or nouns they can think of that relate to a certain topic within a certain period of time.
Practice writing academic and business email messages in real-time. If you have older students, learning how to write effective email messages in English is likely one of the top skills they want to acquire. Distribute iPads evenly and have students -- or, if you class is large, pairs or groups of students -- open the iPad's 'Mail' application, write you a sample email to critique and send it to you. Open the email on the computer connected to the classroom's project and display it for the class to see. Critique the email and repeat this procedure for as many students as your class period will allow.
Distribute instructions for class activities or after-class handouts in PDF format. Create your documents before class begins and if the iPads belong to you, load them with the files. Otherwise, email them to your students in advance and inform them to bring the files with them. This will not only save on paper, but on the time you spend preparing endless copies of things.
Hold class outside or in public by bringing mobile network-enabled iPads with you. As this will mean that Internet works almost everywhere you go, you can allow your students to interact with English speakers in the real world without having to carry around messy stacks of paper. Additionally, you might create an activity where the students use the iPad's 'Voice Memos' application to record differences in different speakers' accents and inflection.
Allow students to access audio, video and other real-world English media using the iPad's Internet and video capabilities. Have them point the iPad's Web browser to respected news sites like 'BBC,' 'The Wall Street Journal' and 'The San Francisco Chronicle,' where they can read all the days' news instantly, at their own pace and without having to use non-class time to do so.
Download ESL games and applications from the iPad's 'AppStore.' Tap the 'AppStore' icon and search for the term 'ESL' to browse which types of applications are available to suit your needs.

How to create a stop

You will need to have a Mac /Apple computer with high speed internet connection and a digital video camera to try this project. Once you are connected go to -- http://www.download.com/SingleFramer/3000-2186_4-10784553.html --- and download the Free 'SingleFramer' Software for Mac. I have provided links to the software download and my Stop-Motion film in Resources below.
Once you have downloaded the Freeware (SingleFramer) , install and open the application. Make sure you have your digital video camera plugged in, If you have the Apple isight camera already on your Macbook you don't need to worry about plugging in a digital video camera.
Click on the SingleFramer icon in Applications and click Watching - 'Start Watching'. You should now see a Live video of what your camera sees.
Now it's time to go get your characters. If your kids have any toys with movable parts like the Wall-e robot ... these will make easy characters to start experimenting with. We used a Tin can robot with arms made from straws. So just about anything will work. Think of a short 10-20 second story line. Something as simple as a robot rolling across the screen and waving could be a good 1st movie.
Once you have your character set up in front of your camera you can start. On Single Framer click 'Movie setup', 'Start New DV Movie' Give it a title like 'Movie-clip1' and make sure you see where it is being saved.
Make sure your character is set up how you want and click on the green circle that says 'Grab Frame'. You will hear a click (like a camera shutter). Then you can move your character slightly and click 'Grab Frame' again.
Keep doing this until you have about 10 seconds of footage. There is a running total to the bottom right of the screen that will tell you how many Frames have been captured and how many seconds recorded.
When you are finished your little movie click the red circle that says 'FINISH' You can now go to iMovie and import 'Movie-clip1' from where it was saved. In iMovie drag and drop this 'Movie-clip1' to the story board. You can now add music and a Title in iMovie. When you are happy with the finished product you can share on Youtube and send an email to your friends to show them your work. That's it - Your 1st Stop-Motion Animation has been created, produced and uploaded for the world to see. Now you just sit back and wait for the accolades, Oscars and awards to roll in.
