How to Install Time Machine on a MacBook Pro

Connect the external hard drive to the MacBook Pro using the appropriate USB or FireWire cable.
Click the 'Time Machine' icon in the Dock. The Time Machine icon looks like a blue-green clock with a white counter-clockwise arrow surrounding the hands of the clock.
Click the 'Set Up Time Machine' button on the pop-up window. The Time Machine window opens.
Click 'Choose Backup Disk' on the Time Machine window, then select the external hard drive.
Click the 'Use for Backup' button located on the bottom-right corner of the window. The 'OFF/ON' button under the Time Machine icon automatically switches to 'ON' and the backup starts automatically. A small pop-up window displays the progress of the backup. The length of time the backup takes depends on the amount of data on the hard drive. The pop-up window closes when the backup is complete.

How to Recover an Overwritten File on a Mac (4 Steps)

Open the folder where your overwritten or deleted file was located in the Finder. If it was on the Desktop, simply close all other windows.
Select 'Enter Time Machine' from the Time Machine (backwards-running clock) icon in the Applications folder. Alternatively, if you have the Time Machine icon in your dock, simply select that.
Click the up arrows or a point in time on the bars at the right to 'travel back in time' -- that is, to see how the folder looked in the past. Locate the file(s) or folder(s) you want to restore.
Click 'Restore.' If your file was deleted, it will be restored to your drive. If it was an older version, your Mac will ask you which version you want to keep -- the original (newer file), both files, or if you want to replace the original (newer file) with the older one. Make your decision and proceed.
