How to Secure an iPad (9 Steps)

Tap 'Settings' on your home screen. You'll see a settings navigation pane on the left and a main pane on the right.
Tap 'General' on the left pane and then 'Passcode Lock' about midway down the right pane.
Tap 'Turn Passcode On' at the top of the screen. A 'Set Passcode' window will pop up.
Key in a four-digit passcode that you can remember easily. When prompted, re-enter your passcode to confirm it.
Tap 'Require Passcode' to choose the delay before a passcode is required. You'll see six options, from immediately to four hours. Bear in mind that if you choose one, five or 15 minutes, or one or four hours, someone using your iPad will have that much time to make calls, send emails, make online purchases and peer through your iPad data before keying in a passcode. The shorter your delay time, the more secure.
Tap the 'Simple Passcode' switch to toggle it 'Off' if you prefer to create a longer, more complex passcode using letters and numbers. Enter your old, four-digit passcode in the pop-up window. Next, enter your new passcode and then re-enter it when prompted.
Tap the 'Picture Frame' switch to toggle it 'Off'. Your iPad will deactivate the lock-screen slideshow of the photos in your albums or camera roll.
Tap the 'Erase Data' switch to toggle it 'On'. This instructs your iPad to self-erase after 10 failed passcode attempts. Failed passcode attempts suggest that someone with less than honorable intentions is trying to guess his way to unlocking your device, and this prevents him from succeeding.
Press the 'Sleep/Wake' button on the upper-right edge of your iPad to put it to sleep. Next, press the 'Sleep/Wake' button again or the 'Home' button to awaken your iPad and then drag the 'Slide to Unlock' slider to the right. Type your passcode in the 'Enter Passcode' window to confirm your new passcode settings.

How to Decide Between the Kindle and iPad (4 Steps)

Consider what you want to do with your device. If all you want to do with your device is to read newspapers, magazines and ebooks, then the Kindle is probably the right choice. If you want additional functionality beyond an e-reader, then you might consider springing a few hundred dollars extra for the iPad.
Decide how much memory you need in your device. The iPad has much more room to store data, if you plan to use the device for more than just reading.
Decide if you want a color or black and white screen. If you are only going to read on the device, black and white may be all you need. The iPad has a color screen, the Kindle has only black and white.
Review additional costs. The Kindle requires no additional service charges. The only additional fees are for downloads. The iPad can work in most locations if you upgrade to a data service plan with AT&T.

How to Set Up a Preowned iPad

Connect your computer to a high-speed Internet connection, such as a DSL, cable or satellite connection.
Browse to Apple.com/iTunes/Download and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the latest version of iTunes on your computer. If your computer already has iTunes installed, launch iTunes and follow any onscreen prompts to update to the newest version if these prompts appear.
Sign into iTunes if you have an existing account. Otherwise, click the 'Store' option and create an account by following the directions on your screen. iTunes will require a credit card to keep on file so you can purchase apps (software) for your iPad.
Plug your iPad sync cable into the iPad and a USB port on your computer. The sync cable is the same as your charger cable. Simply pull the cord out of the square wall connector to reveal the USB connector.
Wait for iTunes to recognize your device. It may take a few minutes, but the left panel of iTunes will add a 'Devices' section and the name of your iPad will appear in this list.
Click your iPad's name. This will open the device summary tab.
Swipe the 'Swipe to Cancel' button on your iPad if it starts to sync automatically. After the automatic sync stops, click the 'Restore' button in iTunes. Follow any onscreen prompts to wipe any iPad data and reinstall the operating system.
Click each of the tabs across the top of iTunes, including 'Music,' 'Books,' 'Movies' and 'Photos' and select any of these items you want to sync to your iPad using the iTunes interface. Click 'Sync' or 'Apply' when you are finished.
Disconnect your iPad from the computer after the iTunes window says the sync process is complete. It is now ready to use.
Tap the 'Settings' icon and choose 'Wi-Fi' to set up your wireless network. Just tap the name of your local network when it appears and enter the password, if necessary.
Tap the 'Mail, Contacts and Calendars' setting to set these accounts. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup.
Press the home button to return to your home screen when you finish with the settings. Tap the 'App Store' icon to begin browsing for apps to expand your iPad's capabilities.
