How to Move a Movie From iMovie to an External Hard Drive
Connect a compatible external hard drive to your computer using a USB 2.0 or FireWire cable. Attach one end of the cable to the digital video camera and the other end to the USB or FireWire port on your computer.
Launch iMovie. Click on the iMovie icon in the dock of your Mac computer. The iMovie application will open. When your external drive is connected to your computer, a hard disk icon will appear in the 'Project Library' located in the left side of the iMovie window.
Click 'File' from the top menu and click on 'Open Project.' Browse to the movie of your choice, click on it and click 'Open.' The movie will be listed under 'Project Library' in the left pane of the window.
Move the movie to the external hard drive. Hold down the 'Command' key and drag the project icon of the movie located under 'Project Library' to the hard disk icon located under 'Project Library.' Click 'Move project and events' when prompted with the option. The events of the movie will also be copied to the hard drive, allowing you to edit the movie from the drive in the future. If you choose the option of 'Move project,' the events of the movie will not be copied to the external hard drive and you will not be able to edit the movie from the external drive.
